Glasan: a crafted retreat
Glasan is our small cabin on the Sleat Peninsula of the Isle of Skye, created as a place to slow down and reconnect with the landscape around us. As architects, and as people who live and work in the Highlands, we wanted to design a simple shelter that feels grounded in its setting and heightens the experience of being here.
The cabin is inspired by the traditional airidh — the modest herdsmen’s huts once found across Highland pastures. Glasan is our contemporary interpretation of that idea: robust and protective on the outside, warm and quietly generous within.
Inside, the space is deliberately minimal. Honest materials, careful detailing and a large gable window frame the changing light, sea and sky, encouraging stillness and an awareness of weather, time and place.
Glasan is designed for simple rituals — cooking, reading and resting — and for returning to again and again. When you do venture out, there are coastal walks, wild swimming, kayaking and long days exploring Sleat’s landscape and culture. Whether active or at rest, Glasan offers a calm base from which to experience the best of Skye.

Exploring Sleat
- Paddle or swim directly from the shore in clear, cold water, then warm up by the stove with a coffee while watching the light and weather change over the Cuillins.
- Bring bikes and ride the Tarskavaig and Old loop road, a coastal circuit with long sea views and a strong sense of remoteness.
- Eat mussels harvested locally by our neighbour, simply prepared with a glass of white.
- Walk from your door to Dunskaith Castle ruins, magical and unspoilt, perched over the Atlantic on an off-shore rock with wonderful sea & mountain views.
- Kayak along the Sleat coastline with South Skye Kayaks, passing quiet coves and sea cliffs inaccessible by foot and hanging out with seals and sea birds along the way.
- Walk the forest path at Kinloch, followed by dinner or afternoon tea at the famous Kinloch Hotel Hotel or head to the pub at the Hotel Eilean Iarmain for a pint and a pub meal by the fire.
- Take a Misty Isle Boat Trip around Cann to spot puffins, dolphins, minke whales, orca, and in summer, occasional humpback whales or head up Loch Coruisk at the foot of the Cuillin mountains on the Bella Jane.

About Neil & Laura

We’re Neil and Laura. We grew up in Glasgow, studied architecture at the Mackintosh School, and eventually made our way to Skye — a place Neil had known since childhood, spending summers here helping his grandmother run a small B&B.
Skye is now home. We’ve built our own house here for us and our three children and live alongside an ever-expanding collection of animals. We feel lucky to be in this quieter corner of the island — a place of dramatic coastline, shifting weather and a strong sense of connection to nature.
We wanted to share this special part of Skye with others, and to create something of our own using the skills we’ve developed through our architectural practice, Dualchas Architects. It was a rare chance to pour our heart and soul into a personal project — and one we couldn’t pass up.
